Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -- Margaret Mead

About the Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT)

IEFT opened the Orkeeswa Secondary School for the indigenous tribes of Tanzania in the Spring of 2008 with 40 students. Today there are 80 students and the school continues to grow in reach and service to the extended community -- mostly Maasai but also including the Meru, Pare, and Hadzabe tribes -- in the Lashaine Village and Monduli District of Northern Tanzania.

The Maasai -- traditionally semi-nomadic people who rely soley on their livestock for survival -- are being forced to settle due to a growth in protected conservation lands as well as urban sprawl. As a result, they must learn to operate in the "modern" world while also protecting and preserving their heritage. This is the task assumed by IEFT.

To that end, IEFT is growing the Orkeeswa School as well as supporting the local women's union and elders association. With IEFT, UNITE will work to support:

  • Curriculum development
  • Leadership programs
  • HIV/AIDS broader education to the community
  • Women's reproductive & infant health
  • Microfinance and small business development initiative
  • Agriculture and animal husbandry programs

Please consider a tax-deductable donation to help IEFT continue their work to empower those in greatest need.

Asanta Sana! (Thank you so very much!)
